Brașov Makes National Geographic’s 2025 List of Best Travel Destinations

National Geographic, one of the world’s most prestigious travel publications, has included the Romanian city of Brașov in its 25 Best Places to Travel in 2025 list.

The article, authored by Karen Carmichael, highlights Brașov as a must-visit destination due to its connection to the Via Transilvanica, a 1,400-km trail that links 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Via Transilvanica was also recognized on TIME’s 2024 list of the world’s greatest places.

“Brașov, a medieval city, serves as the gateway to Transylvania, a region known for its ancient forests, charming villages, and the dramatic peaks of the Carpathians,” the article notes. It also emphasizes the convenience brought by Brașov’s new airport, Romania’s first in 50 years, making "Dracula’s homeland more approachable than ever."

The Via Transilvanica itself receives special attention as a remarkable trail stretching 870 miles (1,400 km) from the Ukrainian border to the Danube River. Notably, its Terra Saxonum section traverses Saxon villages and the historic town of Sighișoara, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Meanwhile, the Terra Dacica segment meanders through vineyards and ancient Dacian fortresses.

Brașov is featured alongside other remarkable destinations such as Antigua (Guatemala), Ocala National Forest (USA), Bangkok (Thailand), and Raja Ampat (Indonesia), cementing its place as a top travel destination for 2025.
