Cycling the Transfagarasan – Romania’s Legendary Mountain Road

The Transfagarasan Road, often called "the best driving road in the world", is equally spectacular when experienced on two wheels. Built in the early 1970s under Nicolae Ceaușescu, this dramatic alpine highway cuts across the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest range in the Southern Carpathians. At its highest point, it reaches 2,042 meters near Bâlea Lake, offering unforgettable panoramas and a thrilling climb for cyclists.

The road is open only during summer, typically from mid-June until late October, when the snow finally melts. With its long hairpin bends, sharp descents, and spectacular viaducts and tunnels, cycling the Transfagarasan is a true highlight for anyone passionate about road biking and mountain landscapes.

We include this iconic climb in several of our tours:

Whether you're joining a short adventure or a week-long journey, cycling the Transfagarasan is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a must for anyone discovering cycling in Romania.
