ABOUT THE TRIP

On this one-day trip we’ll combine cycling with hiking through Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii), the most spectacular natural reservation you can visit in the very proximity of Cluj. It contains one of the richest and most scenic karst landscapes in Romania. The canyon, formed through the erosion of the Jurassic limestone of the mountain, is 2 900 m long and the walls have heights reaching 300 m.

No wonder it is a paradise for nature lovers. You can find here easy to medium hiking trails, a multitude of rock climbing routes, and an impressive via ferrata route. More than 1000 plant and animal species live here. Some of them, like the wild garlic or some species of eagle, are rare or endangered.

ROUTE

RIDE OF THE DAY

We’ll start the day with a 15 minutes car transfer from Cluj-Napoca, just enough to get rid of the traffic in the city. We’ll start riding on a gravel winding road towards Micești. From here the gravel changes into asphalt, and it will remain like this for the rest of the ride.

In less than two hours we should reach the gorge, where we’ll change from cycling to hiking. We will walk through the gorge and hike over the top on the way back for spectacular views, and this should take us around three hours.

On the way back to Cluj we’ll choose another route and we’ll finish the day with a challenging climb. After we reach the car you will be transferred back to the city.

MORE INFORMATION

Lunch & coffee breaks

Fresh and tasty sandwiches, together with fruit, dry nuts, and cereal bars are provided during the ride. Any time is a good time for coffee so we can stop in any of the villages to have one. Although the coffee shops on route are not that fancy they will offer an authentic village experience. A good coffee spot is the restaurant at the end of the gorges.

WEATHER

We recommend you check the forecast in the days before the trip and prepare proper clothes. Even if there are small chances of rain, rather than counting on luck, you should pack a light weight rain jacket. For sunny days please don’t forget to carry some sunscreen with you. For exceptionally bad weather we can cancel a tour, if this is discussed with a few days in advance.

PICK UP & TRANSFER

In the morning we will pick you up from your hotel in Cluj-Napoca and transfer you by car to the starting point of the tour. After finishing the ride we will drop you off at the same place or at any other location in the city. Should you have a rented car and should you prefer to drive yourselves to the place where we start riding (12 km away from the city center), we are happy with this option as well.
